Ella Roze Bandouveris is a multimedia artist and designer interested in sculptural objects. Medium agnostic, her work illustrates sunsets, car interiors, palm trees, sidewalks, and shadows, meditating on her lived experience as the oldest of three sisters, born and raised in Los Angeles. Guided by visual familiarity, her work aims to reflect on the familiar, and also reinvent design futures.

The Combs

Three unique hair combs. Solid walnut wood, created using a 3D model that is then carved using a CNC machine.
6 1⁄2” x 4” x 1⁄2”

Within the realm of sisterhood, certain images become ingrained in our collective visual lexicon, and these sculptural combs acknowledge and respond to that shared familiarity. Here, I reference imagery from the shared lived experiences among my sisters and me. Providing varying levels of functionality, these hair combs may relate to messages about a person’s vanity and femininity. By bringing these objects that are typically associated with domestic environments into the realm of sculpture, these combs not only complement the ordinary nature of utilitarian items but also evoke vast conceptual meanings, weaving together beauty, symbolism, and the essence of sisterhood.
